May 2015
It is hard to believe this school year is already coming to an end. Everyone has grown so much!
This month we completed our year long factory project. We sold our products and most groups made a profit from all their hard work. Everyone enjoyed buying eachothers products and hopefully they shared them you you when then they got home.
This month we also began a poetry unit. We have been reading poems in school. The first poem we wrote was an Acrostic Poem.
Here are a few examples of our work:
Happy home Home free Home is where I live
Our home is great Out of harm's way Our house is beautiful
My home is fun Masterpiece Many things in my house
Especially my bedroom Exciting to be home Especially my family
by: Maya by: Chana by: Jordana
Next, we wrote Couplets about the sun and the rain.
The sun is very very hot Sunlight give off beautiful rays. The sun is very hot,
It is hotter than a hot pot. They always make for very good days. And sometimes it is not.
When the sun is very hot to get cool, by: Neriya by: Jacob
I have to go into the swimming pool.

January 2015
In second grade we are learning many new things.
We applied for our factory position and are patiently waiting to receive our jobs. We took part in an assembly line activity to learn about what it was like to work before labor laws. We also learned how and assembly line works and what happens if someone is not doing their job.
In Language Arts, we have been writing our own fairy tales. The final copies are being recorded on the computer. We continue to work on our comprehension skills and have been focusing on using part of the question in our answers.

Second has been very busy!
October 2014
Second grade has been reading about deserts. We worked hard on our first reader's theater by spending time practicing and making pictures to illustrate each of our roles.
In addition to reader's theater, we have been learning about different ways to read and write numbers, comparing numbers, and looking at place value in three and four digit numbers.
We finished a unit on community helpers by creating a presentation and then presented it to the class. Next, we will begin to study factories. We have started by talking about what we know about a factory, and what we would like to learn about them. Everyone is very excited to begin creating a factory of our own!
Below is the final product of our reader's theater, Around One Cactus by Anthony D. Fredericks. Enjoy!

Welcome Back!
We’ve had a terrific start to our school year, and I have truly enjoyed getting to know my students during this first week. Everyone seems to be adjusting nicely to new teachers, new friends and new routines.
As a getting-to-know-you activity, our students answered questions about themselves. They wrote down their favorite hobby, food, and subject in school, and thought about what they want to be when they grow up. Their friends then tried to guess whose answers were whose. Next, the second graders created self-portraits so others could guess as well.
To reinforce the importance of rules, students were placed in mixed groups and given dice but no further instructions. After a bit of discussion and compromise, each group came up with a game to play. The groups quickly learned the value of turn-taking, listening to others' ideas, and that rules make games both workable and fair, much like a classroom. As a grade, we agreed on important rules for our second grade classroom, such as showing respect to our friends and teachers by being good listeners. The most important rule we came up with? -- To have FUN!
