Welcome to second grade science with Mrs. Ouziel!
Balance a Pencil on its Point
We used wire and counterweights to balance a pencil on its point.

Balance
An object is stable when it does not fall down. Gravity is a force and pulls objects to the core of the Earth. Friction is a force that tries to stop objects from moving. When an object is balanced it does not fall even if gently nudged. We learned to balance a variety of shapes using counterweights.

Interaction
When objects do something to each other they interact. We investigated interaction with a series of experiments, observed the evidence of interaction, and recorded them in our science journals. Candy balls turned white as they interacted with water. BTB solution changed from blue to yellow when it interacted with vinegar. When seltzer tablets were put in water there was fizzing and the top popped off of the canister.

Float Your Boat
Property words are used to describe an object. They are often words that can be categorized as color, texture, shape or size. We made a list of some property words and realized that there is a difference between a property of an object and the material of an object. We used the material aluminum foil to design and construct boats that would hold pennies.

Welcome to our science class. In second grade, science students begin to maintain a science journal. They will record questions, data, drawings, and information about the experiments they are doing in the classroom.
